In this book the author shows the connections between literature and historiography as exemplified by the neo-Victorian fiction of the British writer A.S. Byatt, specifically in her novels 'Possession', 'The Biographer's Tale' and 'The Children's Book', as well as the two novellas in 'Angels and Insects'. The theoretical framework is provided by the texts of two philosophers of history, Hayden White and Frank Ankersmit. The author starts with the theory of narrativism and its influence on literature, and then shows the development of the historiographical appproach towards new categories of mediating the past, namely memory and experience, which are visible both in historical writing and fiction. In this way, the author demonstrates how histography and literature follow the same patterns in the presentation of the past.

This fascinating account of the relationship between photography and literary realism in Victorian Britain draws on detailed readings of photographs, writings about photography, and fiction by Charles Dickens, George Eliot and Oscar Wilde. While other critics have argued that photography defined what would be 'real' for literary fiction, Daniel A. Novak demonstrates that photography itself was associated with the unreal - with fiction and the literary imagination. Once we acknowledge that manipulation was essential rather than incidental to the project of nineteenth-century realism, our understanding of the relationship between photography and fiction changes in important ways. Novak argues that while realism may seem to make claims to particularity and individuality, both in fiction and in photography, it relies much more on typicality than on perfect reproduction. Illustrated with many photographs, this book represents an important contribution to current debates on the nature of Victorian realism.

Why do students often graduate from high school unprepared for college writing and what can we do about it. These are the questions that a group of classroom teachers set out to explore. Over the course of seven years, a group of middle, high school, college, and university teachers participated in a federally funded writing coalition project to implement innovative approaches to teaching writing. Together they developed this series of lesson plans designed to make writing both fun and an integral part of diverse curricula. "Practical" is the recurrent motif of each teaching strategy. Developed by real teachers in real classrooms, the lessons are grouped into seven categories: writing process, portfolios, literature, research, grammar, writing on demand, and media.Each lesson follows a standard format that includes purpose of the activity; necessary preparation; required props and materials; process and procedure for implementation; instructional pointers and/or possible pitfalls; and reflections from the teacher that provide "behind the scenes" insights.
