Tom Brown's schooldays / Thomas Hughes. - Londyn : Penguin Books, 1994. - 307 s. ; 18 cm.
(Penguin Popular Classics)
The idea for Tom Brown's Schooldays came one day when Thomas Hughes was wondering what to say to his son, aged 8, before he went off to Rugby. He decided that good might be done by writing a real novel for boys, written in a right spirit but distinctly aimed at being interesting.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.

"The Forsyte Saga", first published under that name in 1922, is a series of three novels and two interludes published between 1906 and 1921 by Nobel Prize-winning English author John Galsworthy. They chronicle the vicissitudes of the leading members of a large commercial upper middle class English family, similar to Galsworthy's own. Only a few generations removed from their farmer ancestors, the family members are keenly aware of their status as "new money".

In December 1878, HMS "Bounty" sailed from Spithead to the South Seas; in April 1789 her crew mutinied in the vicinity of the Friendly Islands, and set the commander, William Bligh, and several of his companions adrift in an open boat. Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) was Permanent Secretary to the British Admiralty and the promoter of Arctic exploration and voyages of discovery. In this role, he had access to unpublished documents and to the papers of Captain Peter Heywood, a midshipman on the "Bounty" whose remarkable story he tells in full. He is able to answer two crucial questions raised by the whole incident - why the crew of the "Bounty" mutinied in the first place and how it happened that the mutiny was prompted and led by an officer. This book was first published in 1831 and has now been reissued to coincide with the bicentenary of the mutiny of the "Bounty".

Published in 1818, after the author's death, this novel re-affirms her belief that true love is the only acceptable basis for matrimony. Eight years ago pretty Anne Eliot was persuaded to break her engagement to impecunious Frederick Wentworth. Now he re-appears, rich and successful, and Anne is twenty-seven. In striving for their eventual reconciliation Anne must overcome many hazards, not least of which is the affection that Frederick develops for Henrietta and Louisa, two lively young charmers...

A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.

Simplified version of A Tale of Two Cities (1859). It is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same period.

Taken from the poverty of her parents' home in Portsmouth, Fanny Price is brought up with her rich cousins at Mansfield Park, acutely aware of her humble rank and with her cousin Edmund as her sole ally. During her uncle's absence in Antigua, the Crawford's arrive in the neighbourhood bringing with them the glamour of London life and a reckless taste for flirtation. Mansfield Park is considered Jane Austen's first mature work and, with its quiet heroine and subtle examination of social position and moral integrity, one of her most profound.

Orphaned Jane Eyre grows up in the home of her heartless aunt and later attends a charity school with a harsh regime, enduring loneliness and cruelty. This troubled childhood strengthens Jane's natural independence and spirit - which prove necessary when she finds a position as governess at Thornfield Hall. However, when she finds love with her sardonic employer, Rochester, the discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a choice. Should she stay with him and live with the consequences, or follow her convictions, even if it means leaving the man she loves? A novel of intense power and intrigue, Jane Eyre (1847) dazzled and shocked readers with its passionate depiction of a woman's search for equality and freedom.

"Wuthering Heights", first published in 1847, the year before the author's death at the age of thirty, endures today as perhaps the most powerful and intensely original novel in the English language. The epic story of Catherine and Heathcliff plays out against the dramatic backdrop of the wild English moors, and presents an astonishing metaphysical vision of fate and obsession, passion and revenge.

Frankenstein / Mary Shelly. - New York : Lancer Books, cop. 1968. - 349 s. ; 18 cm.
"Frankenstein" is the classic gothic horror novel which has thrilled and engrossed readers for two centuries. Written by Mary Shelley, it is a story which she intended would ‘curdle the blood and quicken the beatings of the heart.’ The tale is a superb blend of science fiction, mystery and thriller. Victor Frankenstein driven by the mad dream of creating his own creature, experiments with alchemy and science to build a monster stitched together from dead remains. Once the creature becomes a living breathing articulate entity, it turns on its maker and the novel darkens into tragedy. The reader is very quickly swept along by the force of the elegant prose, the grotesque, surreal imagery, and the multi-layered themes in the novel. Although first published in 1818, Shelley’s masterpiece still maintains a strong grip on the imagination and has been the inspiration for numerous horror movies, television and stage adaptations.
