Selling Scottish heritage has been a boom industry since the Victorians took their holidays in the highlands. But what effect has this "Balmoralization of Scotland" had on its people and national identity? This work presents a study of the Scottish heritage industry. Asking why heritage is so central to Scotland's definition of itself and to that of others, it accounts for the heritage industry's rise at home and abroad within the context of Scottish culture. It takes a covert look behind the scenes at the drivers of the heritage machine, The National Trust for Scotland, the Scottish Tourist Board and Historic Scotland, and at the powerful lairds who influence the heritage industry directly or indirectly. This work explores the heritage consumers who demand new sources of entertainment and shows how heritage fits into their patterns of leisure, consumption and lifestyle. Written by three sociologists, this is a study of the meanings which consumers apply to their heritage, how heritage differs fundamentally from history and why such political and national importance is attached to a nation's quest for its heritage. This work is intended for use by students of tourism and heritage within sociology, cultural studies, history and tourism.

Index s. 267-278
"Scotland and Nationalism" provides an authoritative survey of Scottish social and political history from 1707 to the present day. Focusing on political nationalism in Scotland, Christopher Harvie examines why this nationalism remained apparently in abeyance for two and a half centuries, and why it became so relevant in the second half of the twentieth century. This fourth edition brings the story and historiography of Scottish society and politics up-to-date. Additions also include a brand new biographical index of key personalities, along with a glossary of nationalist groups.

The making of the United Kingdom in 1707 is still a matter of significant political and historical controversy. Allan Macinnes here offers a major interpretation that sets the Act of Union within a broad European and colonial context and provides a comprehensive picture of its transatlantic and transoceanic ramifications that ranged from the balance of power to the balance of trade. He reexamines English motivations from a colonial as well as a military perspective and assesses the imperial significance of the creation of the United Kingdom. He also explores afresh the commitment of some determined Scots to secure Union for political, religious and opportunist reasons and shows that rather than an act of statesmanship, the resultant Treaty of Union was the outcome of politically inept negotiations by the Scots. Union and Empire will be a major contribution to the history of Britain, empire and early modern state formation.

Plantagenet England : 1225-1360 / Michael Prestwich. - Oxford : Clarendon Press ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2010. - XXII, 638 s., [12] s. tabl. : ill. ; 25 cm.
(The New Oxford History of England)
Bibliogr. s. 587-608, indeks.
England of the Plantagenet kings was a turbulent place. In politics it saw Simon de Montfort's challenge to the crown in Henry III's reign and it witnessed the deposition of Edward II. By contrast, ans as relief, it also experienced the highly successful rules of Edward I and his grandson, Edward III. Political institutions were transformed with the development of parliament, and war, the stimulus for some of the change, was never far away. Wales was conquered and the Scottish Wars of Inpedendence started in Edward I's reign, while Crécy and Poitiers were English triumphs under Edward III. Beyond politics, the structure of English society was developing, from the great magnates at the top to the peasantry at the bottom. Economic changes were also significant, from the expansionary period of the thirteenth century to years of difficulty in the fourteenth, culminating in the greatest demographic disaster of historical times, the Black Death. Embracing politics and government, kingship, the structure of society, France, Scotland, and Wales, as welle as areas such as the environment, management of the land, and crime and punishment, Michael Prestwitch's magisterial survey casts the plantagenet past in a new and revealing light.

(Religion, politics and society in Britain)
The 19th century was, to a large extent, the ‘British century’. Great Britain was the great world power and its institutions, beliefs and values had an immense impact on the world far beyond its formal empire. "Providence and Empire" argues that knowledge of the religious thought of the time is crucial in understanding the British imperial story. The churches of the United Kingdom were the greatest suppliers of missionaries to the world, and there was a widespread belief that Britain had a divine mission to spread Christianity and civilisation, to eradicate slavery, and to help usher in the millennium; the Empire had a providential purpose in the world. This is the first connected account of the interactions of religion, politics and society in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales between 1815 and 1914. "Providence and Empire" is essential reading for any student who wishes to gain an insight into the social, political and cultural life of this period.

(Palgrave Foundations)
Bibliogr., indeks.
The nineetenth century was a period of striking developments, and subject to a great pressure of change. This process of change is the primary focus of the book. Organised into a series of thematic chapters, Black and MacRaild's wide-ranging text offers the reader an analysis of numerous spheres of human history: politics, empire and warfare; economy, society and population; religion and culture. The book also offers considered treatment of Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with a truly British (as opposed to English) perspective maintained throughout. With numerous illustrations, helpful explanatory tables, boxes and textual inserts, as well as a list of further reading with each chapter, "Ninteetenth Century Britain" is an excellent introductory text book for students of this most vital period in British history.
