Island Stories : unravelling Britain / Raphael Samuel. - Londyn ; Nowy Jork : "Verso". - XXII, 391 s. ; 24 cm.
Słowo kluczowe: Great Britain ; civilization ; historiography
This work offers an account of the heroes and villains, legends and foibles of the four nations that inhabit the British Isles. Raphael Samuel is interested by the face that traditions can disappear no less abruptly than they were invented. How is it, he asks, that the Scots have lost interest in a British narrative of which they were once a central protagonist? Why is the celebration of "Britons" thriving today just as its object has become problematic? The book conveys the mutability of national conceits. Samuels calls as witness numerous authorities - Bede and Gerald of Barri, Macaulay and Stubbs, Shakespeare and Dickens, Lord Reith and Raymond Williams, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Benn - each of whom sought to renew the sense of national identity by means of an acute sense of the past. A sequel to "Theatres of Memory", the book is a study of the way nations use their past to lend meaning to the present and future.

In this richly interdisciplinary work twenty-eight of the nation's leading critics and scholars offer a comprehensive exploration of American society and culture. Each outstanding in his or her own field, the contributors address "America" from a diversity of disciplines, personal histories, regions, and political perspectives. "Making America" is a dynamic account of the American experience, from matters of landscape, immigration, and urbanization; to manners, literature, and the arts; social organization and values; religion, science, philosophy, and law. An introduction and twenty-six skillfully written chapters combine historical developments with critical analyses in a broad portrait of the United States. Taken in sequence, the essays will provoke readers to experience the still-evolving society and complex cultures of the American people. Since the chapters are equally valuable when considered individually, the construction of this volume also encourages selective reading. Refreshingly accessible, "Making America" is essential for students and scholars across the field of American Studies and for general readers concerned with cultural literacy. Each chapter includes an extensive descriptive bibliography for those who wish to explore particular topics in more depth. In addition, a fine selection of maps, paintings, and photographs illustrate the intricate structure of American life.

Selling Scottish heritage has been a boom industry since the Victorians took their holidays in the highlands. But what effect has this "Balmoralization of Scotland" had on its people and national identity? This work presents a study of the Scottish heritage industry. Asking why heritage is so central to Scotland's definition of itself and to that of others, it accounts for the heritage industry's rise at home and abroad within the context of Scottish culture. It takes a covert look behind the scenes at the drivers of the heritage machine, The National Trust for Scotland, the Scottish Tourist Board and Historic Scotland, and at the powerful lairds who influence the heritage industry directly or indirectly. This work explores the heritage consumers who demand new sources of entertainment and shows how heritage fits into their patterns of leisure, consumption and lifestyle. Written by three sociologists, this is a study of the meanings which consumers apply to their heritage, how heritage differs fundamentally from history and why such political and national importance is attached to a nation's quest for its heritage. This work is intended for use by students of tourism and heritage within sociology, cultural studies, history and tourism.

American popular culture is everywhere. All over the world, kids wear Levis, radios blare rap songs, television stations broadcast American programs, and Hollywood movies draw huge audiences. Does this massive "Americanization" of the globe represent some sinister form of cultural imperialism? Alternatively, do audiences and consumers in the importing countries accept American movies, music, and television programs because they match local trends and desires? Do receiving communities transform these products to fit their own needs, to the point where they are no longer "American" but in fact have become indigenous? And who is in charge of all of this, anyway? Is it Wall Street, Madison Avenue, the Pentagon, the CIA, or Hollywood? Is it, at least partly, local economic and political elites in the receiving countries? Or is it simply "the people," nationalities be damned? These are the questions at the heart of the essays collected in "Here, There and Everywhere." Essays by 23 authors from 14 countries cover topics from Japan to Spain, Nigeria to Russia, and from West Germany to East Germany (a distance that seemed to be further than travelling to the moon, yet was covered by rock 'n' roll most easily, despite the wall). In five sections, they examine the historical background, the impact of Hollywood, the power of American popular music from jazz to rock 'n' roll and rap, and the popularity of as well as resistance to American popular culture in particular countries.

Sixties Britain : culture, society and politics / Mark Donnelly. - Harlow : Pearson Education Limited, cop. 2005. - XV, 230 s. ; [16] s. tabl. ; 24 cm.
"Sixties Britain" provides a more nuanced and engaging history of Britain. This book analyses the main social, political, cultural and economic changes Britain undertook as well as focusing on the 'silent majority' who were just as important as the rebellious students, the residents if Soho and the icons of popular culture. "Sixties Britain" engages the reader without losing sight of the fact that the 1960s were a vibrant, fascinating and controversial time in British History.

Popular culture is a central part of everyday life to many Americans. Personalities such as Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordan are more recognizable to many people than are most elected officials. With Amusement for All is the first comprehensive history of two centuries of mass entertainment in the United States, covering everything from the penny press to Playboy, the NBA to NASCAR, big band to hip hop, and other topics including film, comics, television, sports, dance, and music. Paying careful attention to matters of race, gender, class, technology, economics, and politics, LeRoy Ashby emphasizes the complex ways in which popular culture simultaneously reflects and transforms American culture, revealing that the world of entertainment constantly evolves as it tries to meet the demands of a diverse audience.
