(Publications of the German Historical Institute / ed. Christof Mauch)
Index s. 487-492
This book presents research on the history of criminology from the late-eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century in Western Europe (Austria, Britain, France, Germany, Italy) and in Argentina, Australia, Japan, and the United States. Approaching the history of criminology as a history of science and practice, the essays examine the discourse on crime and criminals that surfaced as part of different discourses and practices, including the activities of the police and the courts, parliamentary debates, media reports, as well as the writings of moral statisticians, jurists, and medical doctors. In addition, the book seeks to elucidate the relationship between criminological discourse and politics, society, and culture by providing a comparative study of the worldwide reception of Cesare Lombroso's criminal-anthropological ideas.

Basic overview of the history of English literature and language, followed by thumbnail sketches of lasting English novels that have never been out of print. Burgess was never without something insightful and interesting to say, whether in interviews or in this basic introduction to the subject. However, reviews and commentary are limited to specifically English novels and novelists, that is, the novelists of Great Britain, e.g. Lawrence, Austen, Woolf, Waugh, Carey, Maugham, etc. Nothing on American-English authors such as Twain, Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, etc.

Hope and Glory : Britain 1900-2000 / Peter Clarke. - London : Penguin Books, cop. 2004. - X, 496 s. ; 20 cm.
(The Penguin History of Britain)
Peter Clarke brilliantly challenges the commonly held view of Britain in the twentieth century as a nation in decline. Adopting a wide perspective, he examines the political. social and economic changes that transformed Britain. He looks at how jobs and prices, food and shelter, and education and welfare, shaped society and explores such areas as architecture, sport and popular culture. Embracing a century of national experience, Hope and Glory superbly conveys the diverse aspects of three generations who lived through unparalleled change.

The Isles : a history / Norman Davies. - London : Papermac, 2000. - XLI, 1078 s., [32] s. tabl. (w tym kolor.) : il., mapy, nuty, portr. ; 24 cm.
Bibliogr., indeks.
"If ever a history book were a tract for the times, it is "The Isles: a History". "The Isles" is a masterwork, particulary memorable for its concluding survey of centrifugal forces in a late twentieth-century Britain where there are more Muslims tha Methodists. Precisely three years ago there appeared Davies's "Europe: a History". "The Isles" forms a fine companion: encyclopaedic, provocatively argued and enhanced by generous quotations from works of literature in all the Isles tongues. (Roy Porter, The Times)

Słowo kluczowe: history ; slavery
Index s. 463-471
In one form or another, slavery has existed throughout the world for millennia. It helped to change the world, and the world transformed the institution. In the 1450s, when Europeans from the small corner of the globe least enmeshed in the institution first interacted with peoples of other continents, they created, in the Americas, the most dynamic, productive, and exploitative system of coerced labor in human history. Three centuries later these same intercontinental actions produced a movement that successfully challenged the institution at the peak of its dynamism. Within another century a new surge of European expansion constructed Old World empires under the banner of antislavery. However, twentieth-century Europe itself was inundated by a new system of slavery, larger and more deadly than its earlier system of New World slavery. This book examines these dramatic expansions and contractions of the institution of slavery and the impact of violence, economics, and civil society in the ebb and flow of slavery and antislavery during the last five centuries.

The Story of Wales / Jon Gower; an introduction Huw Edwards. - London : BBC Books, 2012. - XVI, 366, [2] strony ; 22 cm.
Słowo kluczowe: history ; Wales
Bibliografia strony 233-254.
An ambitious new one-volume history, to accompany a 6-part BBC series presented by Huw Edwards. Covering from earliest settlements to the present day, "The Story of Wales "explores a country constantly on the move and connected with the wider world, and a people who have reacted with energy and invention to changing times and opportunities. Revisiting the major turning points in Welsh history -- from the fledgling Welsh state under Llywelyn the Last and the ravages of the Black Death, through to its transformation into an economic power with the Industrial Revolution and its participation in the creation of a modern British Welfare State and the economic boom of the 1940s and 50s -- Jon Gower re-examines many of the myths and misconceptions about Wales and the Welsh, uncovering rich evidence of its outward-looking dynamism and its important role on the world stage. Accompanying a landmark BBC series, and with an introduction by series presenter Huw Edwards, The Story of Wales""is an epic account of Welsh history for a new generation.

A History of Modern Britain / Andrew Marr. - London : Pan Books, 2008. - XXXII, 629 s., [16] k. tabl. : il. ; 20 cm.
A History of Modern Britain confronts head-on the victory of shopping over politics. It tells the story of how the great political visions of New Jerusalem or a second Elizabethan Age, rival idealisms, came to be defeated by a culture of consumerism, celebrity and self-gratification. In each decade, political leaders think they know what they are doing, but find themselves confounded. Every time, the British people turn out to be stroppier and harder to herd than predicted.
