Isabella Bird was a woman of remarkable gifts. In 1872, at the age of forty, this rather earnest daughter of a country parson abandoned the rectory nest and began her pioneering journeys to some of the most inhospitable corners of the world. Undismayed by discomfort or danger she was to spend almost thirty years travelling - to the Rocky Mountains, the Sandwich Isles, to Japan, Malaya, Kashmir and Tibet, to Persia, Korea and China - where an indomitable spirit, an unassuming cordiality and, above all, a limitless capacity for being interested won her universal welcome. Her accounts of her experiences became best-selling books and established for Isabella Bird a reputation as one of the great travel writers of her day.

Bibliografia s. 371-377, index s. 379-381
Aphra Behn's novel "Oroonoko" (1688) is one of the most widely studied works of seventeenth-century literature, because of its powerful representation of slavery and complex portrayal of ways in which differing races and cultures - European, Black African, and Native American - observe and misinterpret each other. This edition presents a new edition of Oroonoko, with unprecedentedly full and informative commentary, along with complete texts of three major British seventeenth-century works concerned with race and colonialism: Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), Behn's Abdelazer (1676), and Thomas Southerne's tragedy Oroonoko (1696). It combines these with a rich anthology of European discussions of slavery, racial difference, and colonial conquest from the mid-sixteenth century to the time of Behn's death. Many are taken from important works that have not hitherto been easily available, and the collection offers an unrivaled resource for studying the culture that produced Britain's first major fictions of slavery.

Discussions of the elements of each genre and of writing about literature supplement the thematic approach.

Literary theory : a very short introduction / Jonathan Culler. - Reissued. - Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2000. - 165 s. : il. ; 18 cm.
(A Very Short Introduction ; 4)
Bibliogr. s. 147-153. Indeks.
What is literary theory? Is there a relationship between literature and culture? In fact, what is literature, and does it matter? These questions and more are addressed in Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction, a book which steers a clear path through a subject which is often perceived to be complex and impenetrable. Jonathan Culler, an extremely lucid commentator and much admired in the field of literary theory, offers discerning insights into such theories as the nature of language and meaning, and whether literature is a form of self-expression or a method of appeal to an audience. Concise yet thorough, Literary Theory also outlines the ideas behind a number of different schools: deconstruction, semiotics, postcolonial theory, and structuralism, among others. From topics such as literature and social identity to poetry, poetics, and rhetoric, Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction is a welcome guide for anyone interested in the importance of literature and the debates surrounding it.

Bibliogr.
In this highly anticipated follow-up to "Texts and Lesons for Teaching Literature", Harvey 'Smokey" Daniels and Nancy Steineke share their powerful strategies for engaging students in challenging, meaningful reading of fiction and poetry using some of their favorite short, fresh texts-or, as they put it, "full-strenght adult literature that gives us English majors a run for our interpretive money-but is still intriguing enough to keep teen readers digging and thinking." Use the 37 innovative, step-by-step, Common Core-correlated lessons with the reproducible texts provided, with selections from your literature textbook, or with your own best-loved texts to teach close reading skills and deep comprehension strategies. Give students opportunities to read and synthesize across texts with the 8 thematic text set lessons provided, or use the model unit outlines for teaching the lessons with 'The Giver', 'To Kill a Mockingbird', and 'The Great Gatsby' as springboards for planning your own novel studies.

Literary into Cultural Studies / Antony Easthope. - Rep. - London, New York : Routledge, 1996. - XII, 202 s. ; 22 cm.
Transferred to digital Printing 2003.
Bibliogr. s. 191. - Ind. s. 200
It seems to be mostly aimed at people used to traditional literary criticism, who are interested in the whole new & exciting thang that is Cultural Studies - reading and interpreting all sorts of cultural objects, from tv shows and movies, to public buildings, to cereal packets, to (and this is really where this book comes in) poems and novels and plays. It's a good, clear summary of a fascinating but often confusing field.

(The Cambridge Companion to)
Index s. 241-246
In this Companion, eminent British and American scholars offer a guide to the revolutionary cultural transformations of the first decades of the twentieth century. Chapters on the major literary genres, on intellectual, political and institutional contexts, and on film and the visual arts, provide close analyses and a broader set of interpretive narratives. A Chronology and Guide to Further Reading supply valuable orientation within the field. Students will find much-needed help with the difficulties of approaching Modernism, while the essays' original contributions will send scholars back to this volume for stimulating reevaluation.

This book is a great introduction to great literature and how to get the most out of reading great literature. Many of the questions posed by the author seem inane. They are non-sensical and don't seem to have anything to do with the story. The book does not have a table of contents. It's not missing from the book. It was never included. The selections in the book are very thought provoking.

Literary Terms / Chris Baldick. - Oxford : Oxford University Press, [1996]. - 246 s. ; 20 cm.
This dictionary provides succinct and often witty explanations of over one thousand potentially troublesome terms encountered in the study of literature, from absurd to zeugma, from the ancient dithyramb to the contemporary dub poetry, from the popular bodice-ripper to the aristocratic masque. While it is fully up to date with the terminologies of deconstruction and other modern schools of literary theory, it also offers extensive coverage of traditional drama, versification, rhetoric, and literary history. Literary schools from Alexandrianism to Transcendentalism are included, along with dozens of terms from languages other than English. Adjectival forms and other derived words are displayed, and simple pronunciation guides are given for over two hundred difficult terms, making this thoroughly cross-referenced dictionary the most helpful of its kind for all readers of literature.

A Miscellany of Man / G.K. Chesterton. - [ Londyn ] : Darwen Finlayson Limited, [ 1969 ]. - 179 s. ; 21 cm.
Covering topics ranging from literature to philosophy, history to social criticism, this is a snapshot of thought on 20th-century Europe (and the world) by one of Europe's sharpest wits and ablest pens. With chapter titles ranging from “The Miser and His Friends” to “The Red Reactionary,” from “The Separatist and Sacred Things” to “The New Theologian” and “The Romantic in the Rain,” this volume includes 39 brief sketches of individuals, each one of whom illustrates an aspect of contemporary society. Social, historical, and religious thought all figure prominently in this book, making it of great use in any study of the literary, religious, and social aspects of early 20th-century England and Europe generally. It will be of interest to students and scholars of the essay in English literature. It is a fine introduction to Chesterton's social criticism, which remains unique for its willingness to criticize some of the uncomfortable truths about capitalism without straying toward an inhuman bureaucratic socialism.

American Reader : a nineteenth-century / Thomas M. Inge. - Waszyngton : United States Information Agency, 1991. - XIX, 584 s. : fot., rys. ; 23 cm.
Bridging literature and history, this reader provides a richly textured pen-portrait of the nineteenth century in America. It includes more than 550 pages of essays, travels, sketches, poems, stories, autobiography, memoirs, and speeches. M. Thomas Inge, Professor of English at Randolph-Macon College, edited this fine volume in the series published by the U.S. Information Agency in 1988. The readings fit into four main headings -- "Geographic Expansion and National Character," "Transcendental Inquiry and Individual Conscience," "Internal Dissension and Sense of Union," and "Industrial Triumph and Confrontation with Reality." There's much on the frontier, progress, disunion, and industrialization, and much on their discontents. The reader will encounter many familiar names -- Irving, Twain, Emerson, Thoreau, Holmes, Hawthorne, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, Greeley, Garrison, Lincoln, Lee, Bryan, Riis, Barnum, Carnegie, Harte, and Henry James among them -- but to develop themes, Professor Inge presented many of their less-well-known pieces.

Literary texts and extracts can provide a stimulating basis for classwork on language appreciation and oral fluency. This book for upper-intermediate and more advanced students contains a wide range of texts with related exercises which aim to make literature more accessible while developing general fluency. It is organized thematically, covering such topics as Family, Environment, Rebellion and Women. There is a minimum of three texts in each unit and the related activities are varied and thought-provoking, to stimulate and sustain discussion. The last part of each unit draws together what the students have read: first, by considering the different treatments of the theme; then by actively involving the students in a stimulation which relates theme to text; and finally, by analysing the literary uses of language illustrated in the texts.

In "Literature as Exploration", Rosenblatt presents her unique theory of literature and focuses on the immense, often untapped, potential for the study and teaching of literature in a democratic society. Her "transactional" theory of literature examines the reciprocal nature of the literary experience and explains why meaning is neither "in" the text nor "in" the reader. Each reading is "a particular event involving a particular reader and a particular text under particular circumstances." And teachers of literature, Rosenblatt argues, play a pivotal role in influencing how students perform in response to a text.

Includes bibliographical references.
Futures for English Studies brings together chapters by leading writers across the curriculum area of English to investigate how the component parts of English (literature, language, and creative writing) are located institutionally in higher education and to explore the interdisciplinary prospects of a subject which spans the humanities and social sciences. Through explorations of changing foci in a variety of contexts, the book examines the value and purpose of teaching and researching English language, literature and creative writing in the twenty-first century, both within Anglophone countries and the wider world. The contributors, all practicing educators and researchers in the field, bring a wide range of perspectives to the theme of the development of the discipline, and illustrate that the strengths of English Studies as an academic subject lie not only in its traditional breadth and depth, but also in a readiness to adapt, experiment, and engage with other subjects.
