In 1973, when A New Historical Geography of England was originally published, it was generally agreed that Professor Darby and his fellow contributors had produced the authoritative historical geography of England. That volume now appears as a paperback in two separate books. The division has been made at 1600. Chapters describing the landscape at particular periods are alternate with others that narrate and explain the successive changes. This book takes the story of the development of the English landscape through the agricultural and industrial revolutions to the end of the nineteenth century. There are also descriptions of the face of the country at 1800 before the coming of the railways, at 1850 and again at the end of that century. For all students of historical geography this is an essential book. Many others interested in the history of the landscape of England will also find it illuminating and valuable.

This is a very richly written novel that is emotionally satisfying, though at times rather slow. While it follows the broad sweep of historical events, there are omissions reflecting the mores of the time in the 19th century when it was written. For example, Harold's love for Edith "Swan Neck" (though she is not called that here) is chaste and there is no mention of the several illegitimate children they in fact had (the author hints in his introduction that he had changed this to fit the mores of the times, but that the "less pure connection" rests upon slight authority; however Harold unquestionably had sons old enough to try to avenge him in the next couple of years); and Christianity is shown as inherently more robust and superior to the pagan Norse beliefs that Harold might have acquired from his Danish mother, Gytha.

The book presents the influence of Vikings upon the future British nation. Along with its cultural connotations and references the work is an excellent resource for those interested in the Danish heritage on the British soil.

The Saxon and Norman Kings / Christopher Brooke. - Londyn : Collins, 1971. - 224 strony : ilustracje ; 18 cm.
First published in 1963, this classic exploration of the history of English kings and kingship from the sixth to the twelfth centuries has now been updated for a new generation of readers. A prologue has been added summarizing changes in modern knowledge and underlining the difference between the history of the 'English people', a phrase of the sixth century, and the kingdom of the English, which only came of age in the tenth. An entirely new chapter discusses queens, including St Margaret, who became queen of Scotland. The bibliography has also been completely revised. As in previous editions, one of the books most important features is that it is written from the sources inviting readers to reconstruct the story for themselves by engaging in a series of enquiries into, for example, the nature of king-making, the origins of the English kingdoms, and the meaning of the Bayeux tapestry.
