In view of recent debates on the global spread of English and its international lingua franca role, what pronunciation models are appropriate for millions of EFL learners? Which aspects of English phonetics should be taught to foreign students and which can be neglected with little loss to successful communication? How can English pronunciation be taught in an interesting and effective way which is both learner- and teacher-friendly, in accordance with the latest scholarly and technological achievements? This research-based book addresses these and many other fundamental issues that are currently at the centre of pronunciation teaching. It offers a wealth of new theoretical ideas and practical solutions to various phonodidactic problems that arise in EFL contexts, approaching pronunciation instruction from global and local perspectives and supporting its theoretical claims with extensive empirical evidence. It will be of interest to EFL teachers and teacher trainers, pronunciation specialists and students of applied linguistics.

Young children's knowledge of letter names and sounds is the best predictor of their reading and spelling progress in school-but studies show that many children still struggle with alphabet knowledge at the end of first grade. Now there's a fun and affordable way to answer the call for effective alphabet instruction, without changing your whole curriculum or investing in expensive teaching materials and training. Developed by renowned reading expert Marilyn Jager Adams, this playful, highly engaging curriculum supplement is a must for teachers of preschool through kindergarten, as well as primary grade teachers of students who still need help with alphabetic basics. You'll get 56 activity-based lessons that help children recognize and write each letter in both upper- and lowercase forms and know the primary sound each letter represents.

(ESL & applied linguistics professional series)
Includes bibliographical references (pages 225-242) and index.
Explicating clearly and concisely the full implication of a praxis-oriented language pedagogy, this book argues for an approach to language teaching grounded in a significant scientific theory of human learning―a stance that rejects the consumer approach to theory and the dichotomy between theory and practice that dominates SLA and language teaching. This approach is based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, according to which the two activities are inherently connected so that each is necessarily rooted in the other; practice is the research laboratory where the theory is tested. From the perspective of language education, this is what is meant by the ‘pedagogical imperative.’ Sociocultural Theory and the Pedagogical Imperative in L2 Education Elaborates a new approach to dealing with the relationship between theory and practice―an approach grounded in praxis―the dialectical unity of theory and practice Presents an analysis of empirical research illustrating praxis-based principles in real language classrooms Brings together cognitive linguistics and sociocultural theory ─ the former provides the theoretical knowledge of language required of praxis and the latter furnishes the theoretical principles of learning and development also called for in a praxis approach Offers recommendations for redesigning teacher education programs Its timely focus on the theory-practice gap in language education and its original approach to bridging it put this book at the cutting edge of thinking about Vygotskian sociocultural theory in applied linguistics and SLA.

This book addresses the question through an in-depth play-by-play description of a phonics lesson as it occurred in a real classroom, followed by chapters that look at it from different angles by "zooming in" on one facet to analyze it closely: reading, teacher knowledge, the children, curriculum, culture, politics and ideology, teacher professionalism.

Poruszam w niej problematykę stresu zawodowego u nauczycieli, wykorzystując osiągnięcia takich dziedzin, jak psychologia, pedagogika, pedeutologia, filozofia, medycyna, i diagnozuję stan polskiego systemu oświaty.
