This fresh new introduction to literature contains an international anthology of fiction, poetry, and drama plus a screenplay, essays, autobiographical writing and other varieties of nonfiction. Designed for writing-intensive courses with an expansive view of writing, this text guides students through the process of reading and rereading, introducing them to the critical vocabulary of literary analysis at the same time. Many connections can be made among the 300 classic and contemporary selections, as seen, for example, with the short story, "In the Grove," and the screenplay it inspired, "Rashomon". Complementing the Text is an intriguing photo essay, "Expatriates," as well as color self-portraits of Van Gogh that accompany his self-portraits in letters. In all, this anthology offers exciting possibilities for the study and creation of texts.

An eclectic mix of the fresh and classic, this thematic introductory literature text contains 47 stories, 143 poems, and 9 plays-ranging from Sophocles to Eliot, from Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" to Hellman's "Julia, " from Shakespeare's King Lear to Shange's for colored girls... Clear, brief introductions to each theme help students focus on ideas they can explore in writing. Discussions of the elements of each genre and of writing about literature supplement the thematic approach.

Indeks. Słownik terminów lit.
This book is a great introduction to great literature and how to get the most out of reading great literature. Many of the questions posed by the author seem inane. They are non-sensical and don't seem to have anything to do with the story. The book does not have a table of contents. It's not missing from the book. It was never included. The selections in the book are very thought provoking.

Meet "Carrie," the quintessential young writer looking for love in all the wrong places..."Mr. Big," the business tycoon who drifts from one relationship to another..."Samantha Jones," the fortyish, successful, "testosterone woman" who uses sex like a man...not to mention "Psycho Moms," "Bicycle Boys," "International Crazy Girls," and the rest of the New Yorkers who have inspired one of the most watched TV series of our time. You've seen them on HBO, now read the book that started it all...

From Modernist/Postmodernist perspective, leading critics Richard Ruland (American) and Malcolm Bradbury (British) address questions of literary and cultural nationalism. They demonstrate that since the seventeenth century, American writing has reflected the political and historical climate of its time and helped define America's cultural and social parameters. Above all, they argue that American literature has always been essentially "modern", illustrating this with a broad range of texts: from Poe and Melville to Fitzgerald and Pound, to Wallace Stevens, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Thomas Pynchon. "From Puritanism to Postmodernism" pays homage to the luxuriance of American writing by tracing the creation of a national literature that retained its deep roots in European culture while striving to achieve cultural independence.

(Blackwell Companions to Literature and Culture)

This Companion provides an original and authoritative survey of twentieth-century American drama studies, written by some of the best scholars and critics in the field. Balances consideration of canonical material with discussion of works by previously marginalized playwrights. Includes studies of leading dramatists, such as Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Eugene O'Neill and Gertrude Stein. Allows readers to make new links between particular plays and playwrights. Examines the movements that framed the century, such as the Harlem Renaissance, lesbian and gay drama, and the solo performances of the 1980s and 1990s.
