Edna Pontellier is a wife, a mother, and a member of the Presbyterian Church, but has never felt comfortable being defined by any of these roles. Edna yearns for freedom, independence, and self-fulfillmentÔÇöall of which seem antithetical to the life she has fallen into. When she departs to Grand Isle with her husband and children for a vacation, EdnaÔÇÖs quiet dissatisfaction becomes more problematic, as she gets a glimpse of what life free from obligation and social constraints could be like.

The catcher in the Rye / Jerome David Salinger. - Wyd. 48. - Toronto : Bantam Books, 1978. - 214 s. ; 18 cm.
"The Catcher in Rye" is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth, but it's relevant to all ages. The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection. Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all). Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation, it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you. Written with the clarity of a boy leaving childhood, it deals with society, love, loss, and expectations without ever falling into the clutch of a cliche.

The now-famous "Nick Adams" stories show a memorable character growing from child to adolescent to soldier, veteran, writer, and parent -- a sequence closely paralleling the events of Hemingway's life. In this arrangement Nick Adams emerges clearly as the first in a long line of Hemingway's fictional selves. Later versions were all to have behind them part of Nick's history and, correspondingly, part of Hemingway's. This is a must-have for fans of the iconic author.

One of the greatest of all horror writers, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49) also composed pioneering tales that seized upon the scientific developments of an era marked by staggering change. In this collection of sixteen stories, he explores such wide-ranging contemporary themes as galvanism, time travel and resurrection of the dead. 'The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfall' relates a man's balloon journey to the moon with a combination of scientific precision and astonishing fantasy. Elsewhere, the boundaries between horror and science are elegantly blurred in stories such as 'The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar', while the great essay 'Eureka' outlines Poe's own interpretation of the universe. Powerfully influential on later authors including Jules Verne, these works are essential reading for anyone wishing to trace the genealogy of science fiction, or to understand the complexity of Poe's own creative vision.

W tytu┼éowej noweli Holly Gibney, ulubiona bohaterka czytelnik├│w (znana z trylogii o Billu Hodgesie i z "Outsidera"), musi stawi─ç czo┼éo swoim l─Ökom i by─ç mo┼╝e kolejnemu outsiderowi - tym razem w pojedynk─Ö. "Telefon pana Harrigana" opisuje mi─Ödzypokoleniow─ů przyja┼║┼ä, kt├│ra trwa po gr├│bÔÇŽ a nawet d┼éu┼╝ej. "┼╗ycie Chucka" ilustruje ide─Ö, ┼╝e ka┼╝dy z nas posiada wiele osobowo┼Ťci. A w "Szczurze" niespe┼éniony pisarz boryka si─Ö z ciemn─ů stron─ů swojej ambicji.
