A polite and commercial people : England : 1727-1783 / Paul Langford. - Oxford : Clarendon Press, cop. 1998. - XVIII, [2], 803 s., 16 s. tabl. : il. ; 23 cm.
(The New Oxford History of England)
Bibliogr. s. 741-766. Indeks.
Conventional views of the eighteenth century emphasize its political stability, aristocratic government, stately manners, and Georgian elegance. Professor Langford, however, also brings to life a less orderly world of treasonable plots, rioting mobs, and Hogarthian vulgarity. Using the latest research, and a wealth of original sources, often generously quoted, he tells a highly readable tale of remarkable contrast and changes. Pitt, Fox and Walpole rub shoulders with Dr Johnson, Pope and Fielding. This books shows the vitality and variety of an age often seen in static terms. This was, above all, a period of rapid commercial growth and burgeoning bourgeois pretensions. Many characteristic features of eighteenth-century life were the result. They included military success and imperial expansion, political maturation and economic development, cultural confidence and polite manners. But there were also tensions and contradictions. Evangelical enthusiasm jostled with scientific rationalism, oligarchical politics with popular insubordination, entrepreneurial opulence with plebeian poverty, sentimentality with utilitarian reform. Professor Langford examines all these features and explains the way they relate to each other. He demonstrates that this was a society constantly being stretched by change, and perpetually responding to its challenge.

This book, first published in 2006, is a revisionist account of the monarchy during the reigns of the first two Hanoverian kings of Britain, George I and George II. This detailed study of early Georgian kingship and queenship examines the rhetorical and iconographical fashioning of the dynasty, evaluates the political and social function of the early Georgian court, and provides an extensive analysis of provincial cultures of monarchism. Wide-ranging in the scope of its enquiry and interdisciplinary source material, it rejects the contention that the Georgian kings were tolerated solely on the grounds of political expediency. Instead, Hannah Smith argues that they enjoyed a rich popularity that grew out of a flourishing culture of loyalism. In doing so, she engages with key debates over the nature of early eighteenth-century British society, highlights the European context to British political thinking, and, more broadly, illuminates the functioning of cultures of power in this period.

Modern Britain : a social history 1750-1997 / Edward Royle. - 2nd ed. - London : Bloomsbury, cop. 2010. - XVIII, 472 s. ; 23 cm.
Royle calls on an impressive range of materials (supported by an excellent bibliography) to offer a judicious review of most of the issues currently confronted by social historians. His agenda contains both traditional and novel elements....all are presented with admirable clarity and balance....A volume which shows an astonishing command of such a wide range of material will long prove essential.

A mad, bad and dangerous people? : England 1783-1846 / Boyd Hilton. - Oxford : New York : Oxford University Press, 2006. - XXV, [1], 757 s., [12] s. tabl. : il. ; 24 cm.
(New Oxford History of England)
Bibliogr. s. 664-723. Indeks.
In 1783 England felt down and out, having just lost the bulk of its American colonies. By 1846 it was once more a great imperial nation, as well as the world's strongest power and dominant economy. It the meantime the country survived a decade of invasion fears, and emerged victorious from more than twenty years of 'war to death' against Napoleonic France, while the Romantic movement brought English writers and artists to the forefront of European attention for the first time. But if Britain's external fortunes were in the ascendant, the situation at home remained fraught with peril, with the most prolonged period of social unrest since the seventeenth century. Population was growing at a rate not experienced by any comparable former society, and manufacturing towns were mushrooming into filthy, disease-ridden, gin-sodden hell-holes, in turn provoking the phantasmagoria of a mad, bad and dangerous people. The governing class, in constant fear of a French-style revolution, was forced to engage with social problems to an unprecedented extent, one reason why, by the mid-nineteenth century, the seed of a settled two-party system and of a more socially interventionist state were both in evidence. At the same time the country experienced a great religious revival, very loosely described under the heading 'evangelicalism'. Slowly but surely, the raffish and rakish style of eighteenth-century society, having reached a peak in the Regency, was succumbing to the new norms of respectability popular known as 'Victorianism'.

Anglo-French Relations Since the Late Eighteenth Century / ed. Glyn Stone, T. G. Otte. - Digital Printing. - London, New York : Routledge, 2009. - VI, 274 s. ; 23 cm.
Index s. 267-274
This work, intended to commemorate the centenary of the Entente Cordiale in 2004, examines aspects of Anglo-French relations since the late eighteenth century when both Britain and France were pre-eminent great powers at war with one another through to the post-Second World War period when both had become rival second class powers in the face of American and Soviet dominance. The chapters in this book examine and illuminate the nature of the Anglo-French relationship at certain periods during the last two hundred years, both in peacetime and in war and include political, economic, diplomatic, military and strategic considerations and influences. While the impact of Anglo-French relations is centred essentially on the European context, other areas are also considered including the Middle East, Africa and the North Atlantic. The elements of conflict, rivalry and cooperation in Anglo-French relations are also highlighted whether in peace or war.

Until now there has been no concerted attempt to represent to students of Romanticism the full range of conflicting forces responsible for its dynamic literature. The eleven original essays that make up this volume make a significant contribution to our understanding of the period, providing readers with clear and coherent access to the historical roots, intellectual ferment and cultural range of British Romanticism. It includes a chronology of major publications and events, and an extensive guide to further reading.

"Scotland and Nationalism" provides an authoritative survey of Scottish social and political history from 1707 to the present day. Focusing on political nationalism in Scotland, Christopher Harvie examines why this nationalism remained apparently in abeyance for two and a half centuries, and why it became so relevant in the second half of the twentieth century. This fourth edition brings the story and historiography of Scottish society and politics up-to-date. Additions also include a brand new biographical index of key personalities, along with a glossary of nationalist groups.

English Education 1789-1902 / John William Adamson. - Digitally printed version. - Cambridge, New York : Cambridge University Press, 2009. - X, 519, [1] s. ; 24 cm.
Index s. 497-519
Between 1789 and 1902 the direction of education in England had passed from the Church to the State. This book is a history of that change which culminated in the Education Act of 1902, passed, ironically enough, by a Conservative Government in the face of bitter Radical and Liberal opposition. For it was the Radicals who, in the early part of the nineteenth century, were preaching the doctrine of 'useful knowledge'. Hitherto, religion had been the leading aim of English education and the universities (there were only two) and the public and grammar schools were founded on that premise. The immense advances in scientific knowledge were reflected in changes in the curricula of schools and universities where the classics and divinity had to yield ground to the physical sciences. Professor Adamson describes the Education Act of 1870 and the Cross Commission on religious teaching in schools, the new systems of university education and the muddle resulting from administrative overlapping. He concludes his book with a description of the schoolmasters profession at the end of the nineteenth century.

The making of the United Kingdom in 1707 is still a matter of significant political and historical controversy. Allan Macinnes here offers a major interpretation that sets the Act of Union within a broad European and colonial context and provides a comprehensive picture of its transatlantic and transoceanic ramifications that ranged from the balance of power to the balance of trade. He reexamines English motivations from a colonial as well as a military perspective and assesses the imperial significance of the creation of the United Kingdom. He also explores afresh the commitment of some determined Scots to secure Union for political, religious and opportunist reasons and shows that rather than an act of statesmanship, the resultant Treaty of Union was the outcome of politically inept negotiations by the Scots. Union and Empire will be a major contribution to the history of Britain, empire and early modern state formation.

A land of liberty? England 1689-1727 / Julian Hoppit. - Oxford : New York : Oxford University Press, 2010. - XIX, [3], 580 s. : il. ; 24 cm.
(The New Oxford History of England)
Bibliogr. s. 511-548. Indeks.
The Glorious Revolution was a decisive moment in England's history; an invading Dutch army forced James II to flee to France, and his son-in-law and daughter, William and Mary, were crowned as joint sovereigns. The wider consequences were no less startling: bloody war in Ireland, Union with Scotland, Jacobine intrigue, deep involvement in two European wars, Britain's emergence as a great power, a financial revolution, greater religious toleration, a riven church and a startling growth of parliamentary government. Such changes were only a part of the transformation of English society of the time. An enriching torrent of new ideas from the likes of Newton, Defoe, and Addison, spread throught newspapers, periodicals, and coffe-houses, provided new views and values that some embraced and others loathed. England's horizons were also growing, especially in the Carribean and American colonies. For many however, the benefits were uncertain: the slave trade flourished, inequality widened, and the poor and 'disorderly' were increasingly subject to strictures and statues. If it was an age of prospects it was also one of anxieties.

Between 1700 and 1885 the British became the paramount power on the Indian subcontinent, their authority extending from Sri Lankain the south to the Himalayasin the north. It was a massive empire, inspiring both pride and anxiety amongst the British, and forcing change upon and disrupting the lives of its Indian subjects. Yet it is not simply a history of conquest and subjugation, or dominance and defeat: interaction and interdependency powerfully shaped the histories of all involved. The end result was a hybrid empire. India may have become by 1885 the jewel in the British crown, but by that same year a series of changes had occurred within Indian society that would set the foundations for the modern states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. This book provides a concise introduction to these dramatic changes.

The British Missionary Enterprise since 1700 / Jeffrey Cox. - New York, London : Routledge, cop. 2008. - XII, [2], 315 s. ; 24 cm.
(Christianity and society in the modern world / ed. Hugh McLeod)
Missions are an important topic in the history of modern Britain and of even wider importance in the modern history of Africa and many parts of Asia. Yet, despite the perennial subject matter, and the publication of a large number of studies of particular aspects of missions, there is no recent, balanced overview of the history of the missionary moment during the last three hundred years. "The British Missionary Enterprise since 1700" moves away from the partisan approach that characterizes so many writers in field and instead views missionaries primarily as institution builders rather than imperialists or heroes of social reform. This balanced survey examines both Britain as the home base of missions and the impact of the missions themselves, while also evaluating the independent initiatives by African and Asia Christians. Also addressed are the previously ignored issues of missionary rhetoric, the predominantly female nature of missions, and comparisons between British missions and those from other predominantly Protestant countries including the United States. Jeffrey Cox brings a fresh and much needed overview to this large, fascinating and controversial subject.
