British Cultural Identities / ed. Mike Storry, Peter Childs. - Ed. 3. - London, New York : Routledge, 2007. - XIX, 299 s. : il. ; 24 cm.
"In British Cultural Identities" Mike Storry and Peter Childs assess the degree to which being British impinges on the identity of the many people who live in Britain. They analyze contemporary British identity through the various and changing ways in which people who live in the UK position themselves and are positioned by their culture today. Using examples from contemporary and popular culture, each chapter covers one of seven intersecting themes: place and environment education, work and leisure gender, sex and the family youth culture and style class and politics ethnicity and language religion and heritage. This third edition is fully updated to include environmental concerns, devolution, the infantilization of culture, binge-drinking and reality TV, 7/7 and terrorism, and the general shift from a literate to a visual culture.

Many of the traditions which we think of as very ancient in their origins were not in fact sanctioned by long usage over the centuries, but were invented comparatively recently. This book explores examples of this process of invention - the creation of Welsh and Scottish 'national culture'; the elaboration of British royal rituals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the origins of imperial rituals in British India and Africa; and the attempts by radical movements to develop counter-traditions of their own. It addresses the complex interaction of past and present, bringing together historians and anthropologists in a fascinating study of ritual and symbolism which poses new questions for the understanding of our history.

Selling Scottish heritage has been a boom industry since the Victorians took their holidays in the highlands. But what effect has this "Balmoralization of Scotland" had on its people and national identity? This work presents a study of the Scottish heritage industry. Asking why heritage is so central to Scotland's definition of itself and to that of others, it accounts for the heritage industry's rise at home and abroad within the context of Scottish culture. It takes a covert look behind the scenes at the drivers of the heritage machine, The National Trust for Scotland, the Scottish Tourist Board and Historic Scotland, and at the powerful lairds who influence the heritage industry directly or indirectly. This work explores the heritage consumers who demand new sources of entertainment and shows how heritage fits into their patterns of leisure, consumption and lifestyle. Written by three sociologists, this is a study of the meanings which consumers apply to their heritage, how heritage differs fundamentally from history and why such political and national importance is attached to a nation's quest for its heritage. This work is intended for use by students of tourism and heritage within sociology, cultural studies, history and tourism.

Index s.376 -388
Written by leading international scholars, "Twentieth Century Britain" investigates key moments, themes and identities in the past century. Engaging with cutting-edge research and debate, the essays in the volume combine discussion of the major issues currently preoccupying historians of the twentieth century with clear guidance on new directions in the theories and methodologies of modern British social, cultural and economic history. Divided into three, the first section of the book addresses key concepts historians use to think about the century, notably, class, gender and national identity. Organised chronologically, the book then explores topical thematic issues, such as multicultural Britain, religion and citizenship. Representing changes in the field, some chapters represent more recent fields of historical inquiry, such as modernity and sexuality.

(Researching British Culture Topics and Approaches)
Bibliogr. przy pracach.
The essays cover aspects of British politics, media, music, film and popular culture at the close of the XX century. They indicate that the Labour Party's concept of "New" Britain introduced for political marketing is justified by significant qualitative transformations of British culture. In their critical interpretations the authors apply key theories and methods of the field to empirical material and demonstrate the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to cultural analysis.
