"Britain Now" (Book 1) is part of "Cassette FM" - a new range of self-study audio materials for listening comprehension. Written for intermediate to advanced learners of English, it is the first in the series of books and audiocassettes offering a basic introduction to British life and institutions. It focuses on the press, family, politics and local government. The audiocassette is based on authentic interviews with representatives of each of the four institutions, including journalists, parents, politicians and welfare workers. By listening to the interviews, the learner can build up a comprehensive picture of life in Britain today. This accompanying book is fully illustrated with charts, pictures and diagrams. Each interview is analysed for content and languahe and is fully exploited through a variety of exercises including comprehension questions. The book also contains a glossary, complete tapescripts of the interviews, background information, notes and help with further language work. "Britain Now" is especially useful for students on British Studies courses, but is also useful for any student who is interested in life in Britain today.

Many of the traditions which we think of as very ancient in their origins were not in fact sanctioned by long usage over the centuries, but were invented comparatively recently. This book explores examples of this process of invention - the creation of Welsh and Scottish 'national culture'; the elaboration of British royal rituals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the origins of imperial rituals in British India and Africa; and the attempts by radical movements to develop counter-traditions of their own. It addresses the complex interaction of past and present, bringing together historians and anthropologists in a fascinating study of ritual and symbolism which poses new questions for the understanding of our history.

Although the written law of the EEC was drafted primarily to regulate the trading activities of corporations and member states, the European Court is intervening with increasing frequency in the wider affairs of the citizens of Europe. In particular the Court has become notable for its practice of applying general principles of law to individuals' grievances. This book is a close examination of the key cases in which some of the most important principles of European law have been applied to individuals. The principles examined are those of legal certainty, equality, proportionality and the right to a fair hearing. The individual rights to which these principles have been applied are the free movements of persons, social security rights and sexual equality. Anthony Arnull's book is both a scholarly appraisal of the successes and failures of the application of general principles of law, and a vital addition to the libraries of academic and practising lawyers for whom the addition of a European dimension represents the most important change in their profession this century.
