Bridging literature and history, this reader provides a richly textured pen-portrait of the nineteenth century in America. It includes more than 550 pages of essays, travels, sketches, poems, stories, autobiography, memoirs, and speeches. M. Thomas Inge, Professor of English at Randolph-Macon College, edited this fine volume in the series published by the U.S. Information Agency in 1988. The readings fit into four main headings -- "Geographic Expansion and National Character," "Transcendental Inquiry and Individual Conscience," "Internal Dissension and Sense of Union," and "Industrial Triumph and Confrontation with Reality." There's much on the frontier, progress, disunion, and industrialization, and much on their discontents. The reader will encounter many familiar names -- Irving, Twain, Emerson, Thoreau, Holmes, Hawthorne, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, Greeley, Garrison, Lincoln, Lee, Bryan, Riis, Barnum, Carnegie, Harte, and Henry James among them -- but to develop themes, Professor Inge presented many of their less-well-known pieces.

In this richly interdisciplinary work twenty-eight of the nation's leading critics and scholars offer a comprehensive exploration of American society and culture. Each outstanding in his or her own field, the contributors address "America" from a diversity of disciplines, personal histories, regions, and political perspectives. "Making America" is a dynamic account of the American experience, from matters of landscape, immigration, and urbanization; to manners, literature, and the arts; social organization and values; religion, science, philosophy, and law. An introduction and twenty-six skillfully written chapters combine historical developments with critical analyses in a broad portrait of the United States. Taken in sequence, the essays will provoke readers to experience the still-evolving society and complex cultures of the American people. Since the chapters are equally valuable when considered individually, the construction of this volume also encourages selective reading. Refreshingly accessible, Making America is essential for students and scholars across the field of American Studies and for general readers concerned with cultural literacy. Each chapter includes an extensive descriptive bibliography for those who wish to explore particular topics in more depth. In addition, a fine selection of maps, paintings, and photographs illustrate the intricate structure of American life.

Of the many inquiries received by the US Information Service, Embassy of the USA, a large proportion are concerned with American geography. Through words and photographs, this book gives the reader a partial picture of the nation, telling about some of the ways Americans have used their land and their resources. This is in no sense definitive account, each of the aspects treated here within the space of a few pages has been the subject of many in-depth studies.
